Overview

The Massachusetts Circuit Breaker is refundable credit for eligible senior homeowners and renters who pay more than a certain percentage of their annual income in property taxes or rent. This credit is available even if you do not owe any income tax and can result in a .

Eligibility

You may qualify for the Circuit Breaker Credit if you meet all the following:

  • Age 65 or older before the end of the tax year.
  • Own or rent a primary residence in Massachusetts.
  • Total income is below the annual threshold established by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
  • Assessed property value of your home is under the state’s limit (for homeowners).
  • You are not claimed as a on another person’s .

Renters may claim the credit based on 25% of their annual rent paid.

Add Circuit Breaker Tax Credit

To add the Circuit Breaker Tax Credit:

  1. Go to State Taxes.
  2. Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. Select Massachusetts.
  4. Click on the Credits tab.
  5. Click on Circuit Breaker Credit to add and open the form.
  6. Enter your information and click Save.
