Overview
The Massachusetts Circuit Breaker Tax Credit is refundable credit for eligible senior homeowners and renters who pay more than a certain percentage of their annual income in property taxes or rent. This credit is available even if you do not owe any income tax and can result in a refund.
Eligibility
You may qualify for the Circuit Breaker Credit if you meet all the following:
- Age 65 or older before the end of the tax year.
- Own or rent a primary residence in Massachusetts.
- Total income is below the annual threshold established by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.
- Assessed property value of your home is under the state’s limit (for homeowners).
- You are not claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return.
Renters may claim the credit based on 25% of their annual rent paid.
Important Information
- The maximum credit amount is adjusted annually.
- If the credit exceeds your tax due, the difference will be refunded.
- Homeowners must include real estate tax paid and assessed value from their tax bill.
- Renters should have rental agreements or statements showing rent paid.
Add Circuit Breaker Tax Credit
To add the Circuit Breaker Tax Credit:
- Go to State Taxes.
- Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
- Select Massachusetts.
- Click on the Credits tab.
- Click on Circuit Breaker Credit to add and open the form.
- Enter your information and click Save.
