Extension Process

If you cannot file your Colorado income by the deadline, you may take advantage of the state’s automatic six-month extension of time to file. There is no form to fill out to notify the Department of Revenue that you are taking the extension, however, there is no extension for .

If you owe Colorado income tax, 90% of the tax liability must be paid by April 15th to avoid penalties. Any remaining balance due would be subject to interest only.

If you expect to get a Colorado income tax this year, but do not file your return by the due date, you can also use the extension to file your return by October 15th. If the due date or extension date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the return or payment will be due the next business day. https://tax.colorado.gov/income-tax-due-dates-filing-extension

Payment Options

If you have a balance due, you complete and mail Form DR 158-1 or make your payment through Revenue Online.

Payments Made

To report the amount paid with the extension when filing your regular return, follow the steps below:

  1. On the left, click Federal Taxes then Review.
  2. Click the link I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
    • Alternatively, enter Extension in the search box and click Add form beside Amount Paid with Extension.

      Click on the States tab and click the link Amount Paid with Extension to add and open the form.

  3. Check the box for All Extensions listed were previously filed; all amounts paid have been verified as correct, and all state and city tax returns are ready to be filed.
  4. Select Colorado in the State/City drop list and enter in the amount that you paid with the Colorado Form DR 158-1 (or online).
  5. Click Save.
