Rhode Island – Consumer Use and Sales Tax

Overview 

If you are claiming an exclusion for qualifying options or qualifying securities or investments, you must provide information through the RI – Consumer’s Use/Sales Tax form in your online . This article explains how to locate, complete, and submit the form as part of your Rhode Island return. 

When to Use This Form? 

You may need to complete the Consumer’s Use/Sales Tax form if: 

  • You purchased taxable goods without paying RI sales tax. 
  • You qualify for an exclusion for qualifying options or exclusion for qualifying securities or investments under Rhode Island tax law. 

These exclusions must be properly declared in the designated section of the form. 

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: “I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.” 
  1. In the dropdown menu, select Rhode Island
  1. Click on the Other tab. 
  1. Click on “Consumer’s Use/Sales Tax” to open the form. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click ‘Save‘ once complete.
