KS – Part-Year and Nonresident Return Guide

Article: 50413

Overview

This information is used to provide the residency details and income breakdowns needed to file a Kansas return for part-year residents and nonresidents. These entries ensure correct allocation of income and tax credits between Kansas and other states.

Part-Year and Nonresident Residency Information

On the KS – Individual Income Tax screen:

  • Resident State – Select your primary state of residence.
  • Nonresident override – Check this box if the taxpayer qualifies as a nonresident and the system has not flagged them automatically.
  • Date Kansas residency began – For part-year residents, enter the date the taxpayer moved into Kansas.
  • Date Kansas residency ended – For part-year residents, enter the date the taxpayer moved out of Kansas.

Other State Credit Worksheets

This screen is used to claim credit for taxes paid to another state while a Kansas resident or part-year resident.

KS – Schedule S – Modifications to Federal AGI (Part B)

This screen is used exclusively for part-year and nonresident filers to allocate income between Kansas and other states.

Part B: Part-Year Resident/Nonresident Allocation

Enter amounts of income sourced to Kansas versus federal amounts, including:

  • Wages, interest, pensions, alimony, business income/loss
  • Capital gains, rental income, farm income, and more
  • Adjustments such as IRA contributions, moving expenses, alimony paid, etc.
  • Other federal adjustments from Kansas sources

Make sure to check the box at the bottom of the screen to confirm that Line B20 (Kansas source modifications) is correct.

Override vs. Modification Fields

  • Green fields are override fields. They replace values flowing from federal or other state entries.
  • Blue fields are modification/adjustment fields. They adjust values flowing from elsewhere on the return, rather than replacing them.
