Overview

It is not uncommon for individuals to leave a prior year’s tax return unfinished before the system transitions into review mode in mid-to-late October. Some may still wish to file once the site becomes available again in January.

Policy on Incomplete Prior-Year Returns

Note that the system retains only completed and successfully filed tax returns for the three most recent filing years. If a return was incomplete or rejected without subsequent correction and resubmission, it would have been purged upon the release of the updated software for the new tax year.
