South Carolina – TC-43 – Residential Retrofit Credit

Overview 

The Residential Retrofit Credit is a nonrefundable income available to South Carolina homeowners who make eligible improvements to their legal residence to help mitigate damage from hurricanes, floods, and other catastrophic wind events. These retrofits are designed to strengthen the structure and improve resilience. 

Eligibility Requirements 

You may qualify for this credit if: 

  • You own and reside in a single-family, owner-occupied residence located in South Carolina. 
  • You made qualified retrofitting expenditures that improve the structural integrity of your home against wind damage or water intrusion. 
  • The improvements were recommended by an insurer, licensed engineer, or contractor, and not required by law. 
  • The work was completed by a licensed contractor (or yourself, if properly permitted and approved). 

Note: Qualifying improvements include roof bracing, secondary water barriers, impact-resistant windows/doors, and strengthening gable ends or load paths. 

Credit Amount and Limits 

  • The credit equals 25% of the qualified retrofitting costs, 
  • Maximum credit: $1,000 per tax year, 
  • Any unused portion may be carried forward for 5 years.

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  1. In the dropdown menu, select South Carolina
  1. Click on the Credits tab. 
  1. Click on Residential Retrofit Credit to open the form. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click Save once complete.
