Overview
The IL – Individual Income Tax Return (IL – 1040) screen contains general information entry points and taxpayer-specific checkboxes for veterans, household employment tax, medical surcharge calculations, and donation eligibility, among other options.
This screen appears on the General tab when Illinois is selected as a state return.
Fields and Checkboxes
- Military Veteran / Spouse is a Military Veteran
- If either the taxpayer or spouse is a military veteran and consents to share information with the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, select the appropriate checkbox.
- Household Employment Tax
- Enter any applicable household employment tax.
- Cannabis Program Surcharge Worksheet
- Enter the federal income tax liability as if transactions subject to the cannabis surcharge had not occurred during the year.
- Estimated Tax Penalty / Exemption Boxes
Check any of the following if applicable:
- At least 2/3 of income is from farming.
- Taxpayer/spouse lived permanently in a nursing home.
- Income was not received evenly (annualized on IL-2210)
- No IL return was required in the prior year.
- Taxpayer authorizes the Department of Revenue to share income information with other Illinois agencies for insurance benefit eligibility.
Navigation Instructions
To access this screen:
- Click on the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Click the link “I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.”
- Use the drop list to select Illinois.
- Under the General tab, select IL – Individual Income Tax Return (IL – 1040).
- Complete the screen.
- Click Save.
