Overview
The Credit for Qualified Software or Cybersecurity Employees is a nonrefundable tax credit available to individuals employed in certain high-demand tech fields in Oklahoma. This incentive is aimed at supporting workforce development in software engineering, cybersecurity, and related disciplines.
Who is Eligible?
You may qualify for this credit if:
- You were employed in Oklahoma as a qualified software or cybersecurity professional,
- Your position and employer meet the standards established by the Oklahoma Tax Commission,
- You hold a qualifying degree or certification in computer science, software engineering, cybersecurity, or a related field, and
- You have not already claimed the credit for more than three tax years.
Note: The credit is often used in conjunction with employer-based incentive programs, and employer documentation or certification may be required.
Credit Amount and Duration
- The credit is nonrefundable (can reduce tax owed to $0 but does not result in a refund).
- The amount varies depending on the role and whether the individual is employed by a qualified software or cybersecurity company.
- The credit may be claimed for up to three consecutive years.
How to Report
- Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Click the link: “I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.”
- In the dropdown menu, select Oklahoma.
- Click on the Credits tab.
- Open screen 566 – Credit for Qualified Software or Cybersecurity Employees.
- Enter all applicable information.
- Click ‘Save‘ once complete.
