Overview

The Hawaii Credit for Low Income Household Renters is a refundable state income designed to assist eligible renters in Hawaii with their housing costs.
To qualify for this credit, you must meet all the following criteria (HRS § 235 55.7):

  • You must be a resident of Hawaii and have lived in the state for more than nine months during the taxable year.
  • Hawaii adjusted gross income (AGI) less than $30,000.
  • Have paid more than $1,000 in rent during the year for your principal residence, which must be subject to real property tax.
  • Not be claimed as a by another taxpayer.

The credit is $50 per qualified exemption (e.g., yourself, , or dependents), multiplying at $50 each. If you or your spouse is 65 years or older, your credit doubles to $100 per exemption.

Hawaii offers a tax credit for low-income renters to help offset the cost of rent for qualifying individuals and households.

Add Hawaii Credit for Low Income Household Renters

To add the Hawaii Credit for Low Income Household Renters:

  1. Go to State Taxes.
  2. Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. Click Hawaii to expand the Forms listing.
  4. Click on the Credits tab.
  5. Choose Credit for Low-Income Household Renters to add and open the form.
  6. Enter your information and click Save.
