Extension Process

If you cannot file your return by the original due date, and do not expect to owe taxes for 2024, a six-month extension will be automatically granted. If there is a payment due, it must be remitted by .

Except in cases where taxpayers are abroad, no extension will be granted for more than 6 months.

  • An extension only means that you will not be assessed a penalty for filing your return after the due date.
  • Interest will be calculated on the additional if paid after the due date of the return. Any penalties will be assessed if applicable to your return.

If you expect to owe tax on your return, you must submit your payment by .

If you want to make your payment by mail, you will need to use AL Form 40V, Individual Income Tax Payment Voucher. This form is available on the Alabama DOR website. Enter “40V” in the search field and select the desired tax year for the form. Complete the fillable form, print and mail the voucher to the DOR.

Payments Made

Since Form 40V is not created within 1040.com, you’ll need to manually enter the payment amount when filing your regular return to ensure it is accurately reflected. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. On the left, click Federal Taxes then Review.
  2. Click the link I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
    • Alternatively, enter Extension in the search box and click Add form beside Amount Paid with Extension.

      Click on the States tab and click the link Amount Paid with Extension to add and open the form.

  3. Check the box for All Extensions listed were previously filed; all amounts paid have been verified as correct, and all state and city tax returns are ready to be filed.
  4. Select Alabama in the State/City drop list and enter in the amount that you paid with the Alabama Form 40V.
  5. Click Save.
