CA – California Nonrefundable Renter’s Credit

Overview

You may qualify for the CA Nonrefundable Renter’s Credit if you paid rent for at least half the year and meet all of the following:

  • You paid rent in California for at least 6 months.
  • The property was not tax exempt.
  • Your CA income was:
    • $52,421 or less (single or MFS)
    • $104,842 or less (MFJ, HOH, QW)
  • You did not live with someone who can claim you as a .
  • Neither you nor your /RDP received a property tax exemption.

How to Add the Credit

  1. Go to the State taxes section.
  2. Select I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. In the drop list, select California.
  4. Select the Credits tab.
  5. Select 540/540NR Nonrefundable Renter’s Credit to add and open the form.
  6. Complete the form with your applicable information.
  7. Click Save to apply changes.

Qualification Record

You also need to complete CA – Nonrefundable Renter’s Credit – Qualification Record.

To add it:

  1. Go to the State taxes section.
  2. Select I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. In the drop list, select California.
  4. Select the General tab.
  5. Select CA – Nonrefundable Renter’s Credit – Qualification Record to add and open the form.
  6. Complete the form with your applicable information.
  7. Click Save to apply changes.
