IL – Illinois Schedule G – Guide to Voluntary Charitable Donations

Overview

Illinois Schedule G allows taxpayers to make voluntary contributions to one or more approved charitable funds when filing their Illinois Individual Income (Form IL-1040).

These contributions are not deductible as charitable donations on your federal or state return. They are added to your total or subtracted from your , depending on your situation.

When completing your IL-1040:

  • You can choose to donate to one or more state-approved charitable organizations listed on Schedule G.
  • The total amount donated will be included on Line 36 of your IL-1040 return.
  • If you are receiving a refund, your donation will be subtracted from your refund amount.
  • If you owe, the donation will be added to your tax due.

List of Approved Charities (Subject to Change Yearly)

Some of the common charities listed on Schedule G include:

  • Wildlife Preservation Fund
  • Alzheimer’s Disease Research Fund
  • Breast Cancer Research Fund
  • Veterans’ Homes Fund
  • Homelessness Prevention Fund

Important Notes

  • Donations must be made at the time of filing—you cannot add or adjust donations after your return is submitted.
  • Donations are nonrefundable and non-transferable once your return is processed.
  • Contributions made through Schedule G are voluntary and are not required to file your return.

Add Voluntary Charitable Donations

To enter the above voluntary charitable donation, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the State taxes section.
  2. Select I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. In the drop list, select Illinois.
  4. Select the General tab.
  5. Select Schedule G – Voluntary Charitable Donations to add and open the form.
  6. Complete the form with your applicable information.
  7. Click Save to apply changes
