What is the Home Office Deduction?
The Home Office Deduction allows you to take an itemized deduction for the allowable portion of the expenses for your home that are dedicated to your office.
Can Anyone Take the Home Office Deduction?
With the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in 2017, if you are a W-2 employee, you are unable to claim the home office deductions, unless you are using the office space for a self-owned business or a partnership.
How Do I Add the Home Office Deduction to My Return?
To add a home office form for your Schedule C, E, or F business, or K-1 partnership:
- Click Federal Taxes > Review.
- Go to I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search a form.
- In the search bar, enter Your Home Office.
- Click Add form.
- Once you have added the form, fill it out according to your situation, then click Save at the bottom of the screen.
You will want to add the Home Office form after you have added your self-employment/partnership schedule. The Home Office form begins by asking you what business it is for and allows you to select the businesses you have already added.
