What is CA Form 3872? 

Form FTB 3872 is used to request an additional relief period if the state postponement period ends before the federal one. This applies to ‘impacted taxpayers’—those who qualify for relief under R&TC Section 18572(a) or (b), but did not file or pay before the California deadline. 

To qualify, the taxpayer must: 

  • Request relief 
  • Submit documentation upon request by the FTB 

How to Add Form 3872 

To file this request in your return: 

  1. Open the State Taxes section. 
  2. Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. Use the California drop-down. 
  4. Under the Other tab, select 3872 – Disaster Relief Request for Postponement of Tax Deadlines. 
  5. Select who the request is for (defaults to Taxpayer). 
  6. Fill out and click Save.
