General Information
The HI – General Information screen is where you enter key details about your residency status, filing status elections, demographic info, and exemptions for the Hawaii return. This foundational screen affects multiple parts of the Hawaii Form N-11.
This screen is located under the General tab in the Hawaii section.
Residency Status
If any filer was a part-year Hawaii resident, check the box and enter:
- From / To dates indicating the time period of Hawaii residency
- Exempt from 200-day rule – Check if the filer qualifies to waive the 200-day physical presence requirement
- Nonresident Alien or Dual-Status Alien – Check if either filer qualifies under this classification
Filing Status Elections (Overrides)
Override options for special situations include:
- Special Rule for NRA or DSA who met qualifications to file as Single (taxpayer)
- Married persons who live apart met qualifications to file as Head Of Household (taxpayer)
- Federal Married Filing Joint – Elect for tax savings by filing a Married Filing Separate return (taxpayer)
- Federal Married Filing Joint – Nonresident Alien or Dual-Status Alien for Hawaii – Elect to file Married Filing Joint
These override options allow you to align your federal and state filing positions differently when beneficial or required.
Additional Demographic Information
You can indicate if the return is a
- Final return (Form N-11 only)
- Initial return
These selections assist the Hawaii Department of Taxation in tracking filing status across years.
Exemptions
Some exemptions require supporting documentation, including Form N-172.
- Taxpayer or Spouse is blind, deaf, or totally disabled – Requires pre-submitted N-172
- Married Filing Separate – Spouse is not filing, has no income, and is not a dependent
- Additional checkbox for claiming disability status for either taxpayer or spouse
Schedule X Part II – Special Exemption
This section supports child and dependent care expense claims when the filing status is Married Filing Separately and other conditions are met.
If you qualify as a widow(er), enter the Name and SSN of the deceased spouse.
These entries help determine whether you qualify for Hawaii’s special exemptions for surviving spouses.
How to Add
- Click on the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Click the link I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
- Use the drop list to select Hawaii.
- Under the General tab, select HI – General Information.
- Complete the screen.
- Click Save.
