Overview
If you are a Missouri resident who earned income in another state and paid income tax on that income, you may be eligible for the Credit for Income Taxes Paid to Other States. This credit helps avoid double taxation on the same income.
To claim it, complete the Credit for Income Taxes Paid to Other States form and attach it to your MO-1040 return.
Who Qualifies for This Credit?
You are eligible if:
- You are a full-year resident of Montana, and
- You earned income in another U.S. state, and
- You paid income tax to that state on the same income Montana is also taxing, and
- You are not claiming a refund of the other state’s taxes.
Note: This credit is only allowed for taxes paid to other U.S. states, not foreign countries or local jurisdictions.
Tips for Filing
- Only claim tax actually paid—not just withheld on the other state’s return.
- Use this form even for taxes paid to local jurisdictions (e.g., New York City, Philadelphia) if they function like a state income tax.
- If you are claiming for more than one state, complete a separate section for each.
