Form 1040 – Main Home in the U.S. Checkbox | 1040.com®

Overview

Beginning with Tax Year 2025, there is a new checkbox at the top of Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR that says:

“Check here if your main home, and your spouse‘s if filing a joint return, was in the U.S. for more than half of 2025.”

This question is used to determine eligibility for certain federal credits and benefits.

Where is This Box Marked?

1. Go to the Review tab on the left side of the screen.
2. Under the Federal Taxes section, click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
3. In the search box, type Credit Eligibility Question.
4. Alternatively, click the General tab and locate the form there.
5. Select Credit Eligibility Question to add and open the form.
6. Answer the questions to have the box marked on the front of the 1040/1040-SR.
7. Click Save.
