MA – Code 2145 (MA-1-NR/PY)

Article: 50511

What This Error Means

You’re receiving this error because you selected nonresident and part-year resident filing status, but the system can’t confirm that your Massachusetts income has been properly divided between your resident and nonresident periods.

How to Fix It

Option 1: You did have both MA resident and nonresident income:

  1. Open the MA – Resident/Nonresident Worksheet screen
  2. Enter the income you earned while a resident and while a nonresident in the appropriate rows for each category
  3. Save your changes and return to the e-file steps

Option 2: You didn’t have both resident and nonresident income:

  1. Return to the MA – NR/PY screen
  2. Uncheck the box that says you’re filing as a nonresident and part-year resident (or click Clear
  3. Delete the MA – Resident/Nonresident Worksheet if no longer needed

NOTE: You are not required to select any of the three options available in this section of the MA – NR/PY. You only need to make a selection here if one of these situations applies to you.

Why This Happens

Massachusetts requires income to be split correctly across residency periods. If you file as both a resident and a nonresident without entering this split, your return will be rejected until it’s corrected.
