Overview
The Real Property Tax Relief Credit (formerly known as the School Tax Relief or “STAR” credit) provides a refundable tax benefit for qualifying New York State residents who own or rent their homes and meet income and residency criteria. This credit is claimed on Form IT-229, filed with your IT-201 (full-year resident) return.
Who is Eligible?
You may be eligible if:
- You were a full-year New York State resident,
- You owned or rented and lived in your New York residence for at least six months during the tax year,
- Your household gross income was $250,000 or less, and
- You paid either:
- Real property taxes on your owned residence, or
- A portion of rent that is considered property tax (commonly 25% of annual rent).
Note: Renters and homeowners must complete the same form (IT-229), but different sections apply based on housing status. The credit is refundable, meaning it can result in a refund even if you owe no tax.
