New York – Form IT- 237 – Claim for Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Credit

Overview 

New York State offers a refundable income for homeowners who incur qualified rehabilitation costs on certified historic homes located within the state. The credit is intended to help preserve and restore architecturally significant residential properties. 

To claim this benefit, you must complete Form IT-237 – Claim for Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Credit and submit it with your IT-201 (full-year resident return). 

Who is Eligible? 

You may be eligible if: 

  • You own and occupy a historic home as your primary residence, and 
  • The home is a qualified historic home, meaning: 
  • It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, located in a registered historic district, or 
  • It has been certified by the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), and 
  • You incurred qualified rehabilitation costs that were certified by OPRHP, and 
  • You have received a certificate of completion from OPRHP for the rehabilitation project. 

Note: The credit equals 20% of the qualified rehabilitation expenditures, up to a maximum of $50,000 per primary residence. The credit is refundable, meaning you can receive a even if you owe no tax. 

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form
  1. In the dropdown menu, select New York
  1. Click on the IT Credits 100 – 200 Series tab. 
  1. Select IT-237 – Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Credit to open the screen. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click Save once complete.
