West Virginia – Optional Binary PDF Attachments

Overview 

West Virginia allows taxpayers to upload certain supporting documents electronically when filing their state return. This is done through the WV – Optional Binary PDF form. 

What Is the Optional Binary PDF Attachments Form? 

The Optional Binary PDF Attachments form is a way to securely provide supporting documentation to the West Virginia State Tax Department when filing electronically. 

  • It is primarily used for items that require proof or additional verification. 
  • Most taxpayers do not need to use this form unless the state requests documentation. 

When Should You Use This Form? 

You may need to upload PDF attachments if: 

  • The West Virginia State Tax Department requests original documentation. 
  • You are required to submit special support documents that cannot be entered directly into the
  • You are providing documentation for credits, deductions, or adjustments that require validation. 

Note: Most income and withholding information do not require you to submit original documents.  

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  1. In the dropdown menu, select West Virginia
  1. Click on the Other tab. 
  1. Click on Optional Binary PDF Attachments to open the form. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click Save once complete.
