Indicate Nonresident Alien Status

To indicate that your spouse is a Nonresident Alien:

1. Go to the Name and Address screen.
2. Scroll down to the More About Your Spouse section.
3. Click the blue link My spouse is a nonresident alien.
4. The section expands to show the following options:
   • My spouse is a nonresident alien
   • Spouse is a nonresident alien treated as U.S. Resident

No SSN or ITIN

If your spouse does not have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), the return cannot be e-filed. To file the return, and apply for an ITIN for the nonresident alien spouse, follow these steps:

1. Enter 999-99-9999 in the What is your spouse’s Social Security Number? field.
2. Enter NRA in the First Name field for the spouse.
3. Complete the rest of the return and print it.
4. Manually complete and print Form W-7 from the IRS website.
5. Paper-file Form 1040, Form W-7, and all required documentation.
