Overview
The Shared Care Tax Credit provides a valuable Missouri state income tax credit to taxpayers who provide care for an elderly individual, allowing that person to remain in their home rather than being placed in a long-term care facility. This credit helps support caregivers who take on significant personal responsibility to provide care.
To claim this credit, you will need to complete the Shared Care Tax Credit form and include it with your MO-1040 return.
Who Is Eligible for the Shared Care Tax Credit?
You may qualify if:
- You are a Missouri resident who provided unpaid care for an elderly individual aged 60 or older.
- The individual resided in their own home (not in a facility) for at least six months during the tax year.
- You did not receive compensation for this care (this includes reimbursement from any government programs).
- The elderly person did not receive in-home Medicaid-funded care during the tax year.
Note: The maximum credit is $500 per tax year. It is nonrefundable and can only reduce your Missouri tax liability to zero.
Tips for Filing
- Keep documentation of the care provided, such as logs of services, housing arrangements, or letters from the person cared for.
- The credit is claimed by the caregiver, not the elderly individual receiving care.
- If multiple family members provide care, only one person may claim the credit for the same individual per tax year.
