What Is the Filing Deadline with an Extension?
An extension gives you until October 15 to file your tax return — but not to pay. If you owe taxes, your payment is still due by April 15. Late payments may result in interest or penalties.
How to Add Extension Payment Information
- Go to Federal Taxes.
- Click Review.
- Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
- Enter Extension in the search box and click on Amount Paid with Federal Extension to add and open the form.
- Enter your information and click Save.
Extension Form Error
If you’ve added the form but left it blank, the system may block you from filing and loop you back to Review. If you didn’t pay anything with your extension, delete the form using the trash can icon to proceed.
How to Check Your Extension Status
You’ll receive a confirmation email once your extension is filed. If you haven’t received it, check your spam folder. You can also verify the status on the My Return page — look for a Pending, Accepted, or Rejected status with a date.
Why Does My Extension Say I Only Have Until June?
If you answered “Yes” to being a U.S. citizen or resident abroad, the IRS grants an automatic 2-month extension — June 15. But if you filed a federal extension, you still get the standard extension through October 15, regardless of that selection.
How Can I Return to My Main Return?
Click “Work on Return” in the left sidebar, then select “Prepare” to return to your main filing section.
