To add any other states, select State Taxes in the main menu. Click I’d like to see all my state forms to see the list of states that already have forms completed. The drop list for that state will provide a list of forms by category and a form search box. To add another state,

  2. Select the state in the drop list and click Add.
  3. Once the state has been added, you can search for state-specific forms to add or edit.

Remove State

Our system automatically uses your federal return information to complete as much of your state return as possible. If you want to remove a state, choose one of the options below.

Remove All

To remove all state returns, from the sidebar menu, click State Taxes > I’d like to remove my state return > Please remove my state return.

You can also remove a state from the Name & Address tab by choosing Click here where it says Good news! You have selected to prepare your state return with us. Click here if you change your mind.

This will remove the state return. If you decide to add the state return back, click Never mind, add back my state return.

Suppress Single

To suppress a single state return, click Federal Taxes on the left, then click on Review. Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form, type Print Options and click Add Form. Near the bottom locate the Suppress these States section below State Overrides and select the states to be removed in the drop lists. This will remove those selected state returns.

You should only include states that are currently being produced on your return that you do not want included. All other states will be excluded automatically unless information for that state is later keyed into the program.

State Return Only

To help prevent tax fraud, if you have already filed a federal return, the state return must be e-filed on the same site. If you filed your federal return on another site, you cannot e-file your state return using 1040.com; however, you can prepare the state return using 1040.com, print it, and mail it to the state taxing authority.

If you have already filed your federal return using and want to e-file your state return separately, click File on the left, then follow the on-screen prompts until you reach the E-filing Your Return screen. On that screen, click the link that says, No thanks, I don’t want to e-file my federal return and follow the prompts to submit your state return.

Amending State

When amending your federal return, you may also need to amend your state return. To amend a state return, you will need to download and print the forms from your state Department of Revenue website. State amended returns are not available on this platform.

You can only access returns that were created and filed through 1040.com. If you filed another way or need a copy of a return that is no longer available online, you can request a transcript from the state.

Prior-Year

Only current year regular state returns can be filed through 1040.com. If you need to file a prior-year state return, you can get the forms from your state’s Department of Revenue or Taxation website or visit a tax return preparer in your area.
