Overview
The Illinois e-File PIN (IL-PIN) is an eight-digit personal identification number issued by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR). It serves as an electronic signature when filing Form IL‑1040 through an approved e-file provider.
Who Needs an IL-PIN
- Returning Filers: If you filed an Illinois tax return in the last two years, an IL‑PIN has been assigned to you by the state.
- First-Time Filers: You will not have an IL‑PIN. Instead, you can validate your identity using your Illinois driver’s license or state-issued ID.
How to retrieve your IL-PIN
There are two main ways to retrieve your ILPIN:
1. Online – MyTax Illinois
- Visit the IL-PIN Inquiry page.
- Provide your:
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Date of Birth
- Prior-year IL Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), or
- Illinois driver’s license/state ID
2. By Phone
- Call the Illinois Department of Revenue at 800-732-8866
- You will need to verify your identity using the same information as above.
e-Filing Without an IL-PIN
If you are a first-time filer or choose not to use an IL-PIN, you may e-file using your:
- Illinois driver’s license, or
- State-issued ID card.
This serves as your electronic signature alternative.
Important Notes
- Joint Returns: Each spouse must provide their own IL-PIN or use their own state-issued ID for signature authorization.
- Accuracy Matters: Errors in IL-PIN entry, SSN, or ID information can cause rejection of your return.
- The IL-PIN is only valid for Illinois state returns, not for federal returns or other states.
How to Enter During e-File
The IL PIN is entered during the e-file process. The IL PIN will be prompted when you are entering in the self-selected five digit IRS pin number.
