The IA – General Information screen is divided into two separate forms in the software. Both screens must be added and saved separately to complete the Iowa Individual Income (Form IA 1040).

Page 1 – Residency, Overrides, and Information

This screen captures important details about part-year residency, local reporting, and income override values.

  • Part-Year Residents:
    • County Code – Enter the Iowa county where the taxpayer lived. 
    • School District Code – Choose the appropriate code from the drop-down. 
    • School District Name – Enter the corresponding district name. 
  • Filing Status Override
    • If the taxpayer is Single and was claimed as a on another Iowa return, indicate Yes or No.
  • Spouse Information – Only required when filing status is Married Filing Separate
    • Iowa Net Income 
    • Iowa Taxable Income 
    • Federal Itemized/Standard Deduction 
    • QBI Deduction 
    • NOL Carryover 
    • Tax From Tax Table 
  • Alternate Signature: 
    • If applicable, indicate whether you are enabling the Alternative Electronic Signature option.

Page 2 – Credits, Contributions, and Penalties

This second screen allows for credit and deduction overrides, as well as penalty and interest inputs.

  • Credits
    • Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Credit 
  • Contributions
    • Fish and Wildlife Fund 
    • Child Abuse Prevention 
    • Early Childhood Development Credit – Based on qualifying childcare expenses
  • Other Options
    • Do not allow the Iowa Earned Income Credit – Check only if opting out
  • Penalty and Interest
    • Penalty – Enter any applicable late filing penalty 
    • Interest – Enter applicable interest on unpaid tax

How to Add These Screens

  1. Click on the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen.
  2. Click the link I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  3. Use the drop list to select Iowa.
  4. Under the General tab, select IA – Individual Income Tax Return and IA – 1040 Individual Income Tax Return – Page 2.
  5. Complete the screens.
  6. Click Save.
