Minnesota – Schedule M1SA – Itemized Deduction Overrides

Overview 

If your Minnesota return automatically pulls itemized deductions from your federal return, but you need to manually adjust or override those amounts, you can do so using the Itemized Deductions form in your state return. This corresponds to Schedule M1SA. 

When to Use the Override Feature? 

You should override itemized deductions in your Minnesota return if: 

  • The federal amounts flowing into the form are incorrect or incomplete. 
  • You need to adjust Minnesota-specific rules, such as: 
  • Addback of certain federal deductions 
  • Adjustments for state-allowed limits 
  • You want to manually enter state-specific amounts for medical expenses, taxes, interest, or

Note: Override fields are highlighted in green. Only use them if you intentionally want to replace the automatically populated data. 

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form
  1. In the dropdown menu, select Minnesota
  1. Click on the Itemized Deductions tab. 
  1. Select Itemized Deductions to open the screen. 
  1. Enter any adjustments or overrides. 
  1. Click Save once complete.
