Montana – Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit

Overview 

The Montana Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit is a refundable credit available to qualifying low-income seniors who rent or own their primary residence in Montana. If a taxpayer does not qualify for the credit, you can determine why by opening the associated form and reviewing the details within the software. 

Basic Eligibility Requirements 

To qualify for the Montana Elderly Homeowner/Renter Credit, the taxpayer must: 

  • Be 62 or older as of December 31 of the tax year. 
  • Reside in Montana for at least 9 months of the year. 
  • Occupy a home (owned or rented) for 6 or more months of the year. 
  • Have household income of $50,000 or less. 
  • Not be claimed as a  on another person’s return. 

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form
  1. In the dropdown menu, select Montana
  1. Click on the Credits tab. 
  1. Select Elderly Homeowners/Renters Credit to open the screen. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click Save once complete.
