Overview 

If you did not pay enough tax throughout the year via withholding or quarterly estimated payments, you may be subject to an underpayment penalty. New Jersey calculates this using Form NJ-2210 – Underpayment of

You can also use this form to reduce or eliminate the penalty by showing you qualify for an exception or by applying the annualized income installment method. 

Who Needs to File Form NJ-2210? 

You may need to complete Form NJ-2210 if: 

  • You owe more than $400 on your return after subtracting all withholding and credits. 
  • Your estimated payments and withholding were less than: 
  • 80% of your current year’s tax liability, or 
  • 100% of your prior year’s tax liability (if you filed a NJ return for the full year). 

Note: The penalty is based on how much was underpaid and when the payments were made. 

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form
  1. In the dropdown menu, select New Jersey
  1. Click on the Other tab. 
  1. Select 2210 – Underpayment of Estimated Tax to open the screen. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click Save once complete.
