Article: 50486

Overview

In certain cases, you may be required or advised to include supporting documents with your NJ-1040 return, such as explanations, verification letters, or documents related to specific credits, deductions, or adjustments. To submit these electronically, use the Optional PDF form within your New Jersey return.

When to Use This Form

Use this form when:

  • You are instructed to attach supporting documentation to your Missouri return but do not see a specific upload prompt in your software.
  • You wish to include optional documentation for clarification, verification, or compliance (e.g., waiver requests, landlord certifications, explanations for override entries).
  • You want to proactively include documents that might help avoid a DOR follow-up.

Note: W-2s, 1099s, and other routine income forms are not required to be attached unless specifically requested.

Managing Your Attachments

  • After saving the form, go to the “My Return” tab on the left sidebar.
  • Click “Manage Attachments” to:
  • View, edit, or delete existing attachments.
  • Verify that the PDFs are properly linked before submitting your return.

  • Description: A clear and concise label (e.g., “Letter explaining estimated payment delay”).
  • Filename: A short, descriptive name for the PDF file (must end with .PDF).
  • After entering all required data, scroll to the bottom of the form and click Save.
  • Upload the document. Ensure the file is in .PDF format and is labeled clearly.

Best Practices

  • Do not upload documentation unless you are specifically required or prompted to do so.
  • If possible, combine related pages into one PDF per upload to keep your filing clean.
  • Make sure files are legible, unencrypted, and under size limits if specified by your software or the NJ Division of Taxation.
