Claiming a Disabled Spouse or Adult Dependent

To claim a disabled or adult on your , follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Name & Address screen. This appears early in the filing process, or you can access it from the left-hand sidebar.
  2. For a disabled spouse, answer No to the question, Can you be claimed as a dependent by someone else? even if you are claiming them as an adult dependent. This ensures proper classification for dependent care purposes.
  3. Go to Federal Taxes > Dependents.
  4. Answer Yes when asked, Do you have any dependents you’d like to claim?
  5. Enter the dependent’s demographic information (name, SSN, date of birth).
  6. In the drop-down How is this dependent related to you?, select OTHER.
  7. Click I’d like to see the advanced options for this dependent.
  8. Below Advanced Options:
    • Check Disabled
    • Select Not a dependent.
  9. Scroll down and click Save.
  10. Go to Federal Taxes > Review.
  11. Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
  12. Type 2441 and select Form 2441 – Child and Dependent Care Expenses.
  13. When prompted, indicate whether you or your spouse were a student or disabled. Select Yes if applicable.
  14. Enter any dependent care expenses (if relevant) and click Next.
  15. On the final screen, click Advanced Options.
  16. In the section Earned Income for 2441 purposes only, enter qualifying earned income in the For your spouse box.
    • Multiply $250 by the number of months the spouse was disabled.
    • If the spouse was disabled for the full year, enter $3,000.
  17. Click Save.
