To claim a disabled spouse or adult dependent on your tax return, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Name & Address screen. This appears early in the filing process, or you can access it from the left-hand sidebar.
- For a disabled spouse, answer No to the question, Can you be claimed as a dependent by someone else? even if you are claiming them as an adult dependent. This ensures proper classification for dependent care purposes.
- Go to Federal Taxes > Dependents.
- Answer Yes when asked, Do you have any dependents you’d like to claim?
- Enter the dependent’s demographic information (name, SSN, date of birth).
- In the drop-down How is this dependent related to you?, select OTHER.
- Click I’d like to see the advanced options for this dependent.
- Below Advanced Options:
- Check Disabled
- Select Not a dependent.
- Scroll down and click Save.
- Go to Federal Taxes > Review.
- Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
- Type 2441 and select Form 2441 – Child and Dependent Care Expenses.
- When prompted, indicate whether you or your spouse were a student or disabled. Select Yes if applicable.
- Enter any dependent care expenses (if relevant) and click Next.
- On the final screen, click Advanced Options.
- In the section Earned Income for 2441 purposes only, enter qualifying earned income in the For your spouse box.
- Multiply $250 by the number of months the spouse was disabled.
- If the spouse was disabled for the full year, enter $3,000.
- Click Save.
