An identity protection pin (IP PIN) is a six-digit number issued by the IRS that serves as an added layer of security to prevent identity theft, specifically tax-related identity theft. If the IRS assigned you an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN), you must include this PIN when you file your return. Generally, the IRS mails you a letter (called a CP01A notice) containing your IP PIN – you will need to find your IP PIN to file your return. The IRS may issue an IP PIN for you (the taxpayer), your spouse, or your dependents.
