Overview
After filing your return with 1040.com, you may notice that some numbers on your account appear different from what you saw when you originally filed. This article outlines the two main reasons for this and explains how you can view your original return.
Reason 1: Taxpayer Changes – Added or Removed Forms
Even after filing, the software allows you to:
- Add new forms
- Remove existing forms
- Modify previously entered data
These actions are intended to let you experiment with different scenarios or run calculations. However, any changes made will update your account as if you haven’t filed yet, which may cause figures on your screen to differ from the ones on your filed return.
Reason 2: Automatic Site Calculations – Time-Dependent Updates
Certain tax calculations are time-sensitive and continue updating after you file.
For example:
The penalty for underpayment of estimated taxes increases over time.
If this penalty applies, the software will continue to update the amount to reflect what it would be if you had not yet paid your taxes.
How to View Your Original Filed Return
When you submit your return, the system generates a final, locked PDF copy that won’t change unless you file an amendment.
To access your original return:
- Go to the My Account tab at the top of your homepage.
- Click the PDF icon next to your return:
- Select 20xx Tax Year | e-filed [date]
