MA – Adding an Unformatted Statement for e-File

Article: 50339

Overview

In certain situations, you may need to include an unformatted or custom statement with your Massachusetts —such as explaining a unique filing position, providing additional detail, or responding to a Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) request.

To do this, use the Statements screen within your state return to enter and attach a free form note or supplemental explanation.

An unformatted statement is a plain-text entry that is not linked to a specific schedule or form in the return. It can be used to:

  • Provide clarifying details about a deduction or credit.
  • Explain unusual income or withholding.
  • Report allocations or elections that do not have a standard entry field.
  • Comply with specific DOR requests for additional information.

These statements are included as part of your return submission and may help avoid unnecessary notice or delays.

  • Be concise, accurate, and clear in your explanation.
  • Do not use this screen to override calculated figures, use the appropriate form for overrides.
  • Attach supporting documentation separately if requested by the Massachusetts DOR.
