Overview
The Preceptor Credit is a nonrefundable personal income tax credit available to eligible healthcare professionals who serve as preceptors (clinical instructors or supervisors) for certain South Carolina medical education programs. This credit helps incentivize licensed practitioners to volunteer their time and expertise in clinical teaching roles.
Eligibility Requirements
You may claim the Preceptor Credit if you:
- Are a licensed physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant,
- Served as a preceptor without compensation (other than reimbursement for expenses),
- Provided at least one qualifying clinical rotation lasting at least 4 weeks in South Carolina,
- Supervised students from a SC public institution or clinical program affiliated with a public SC college or university.
Note: Credit is only available to those who do not receive direct compensation for precepting duties.
Credit Amount
- $1,000 per qualified clinical rotation.
- $750 per additional rotation within the same year.
- Maximum credit: $4,500 per taxpayer per year.
- Credit is nonrefundable, but may be carried forward for up to 5 years.
How to Report
- Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
- In the dropdown menu, select South Carolina.
- Click on the Credits tab.
- Click on Preceptor Credit to open the form.
- Enter all applicable information.
- Click Save once complete.
