New York – Form IT-217 – Farmers’ School Tax Credit

Overview 

The Farmers’ School is a refundable credit available to eligible farmers in New York State to offset school district property taxes paid on farmland. This credit helps reduce the tax burden on agricultural businesses and is claimed on Form IT-217, filed alongside your Form IT-201 (full-year resident) or Form IT-203 (part-year/nonresident). 

Who is Eligible? 

You may be eligible if: 

  • You paid school district property taxes on land located in New York State that was: 
  • Used in a farming business, and 
  • Owned or rented by you, your business, or a related entity, 
  • You actively operated a qualified farming business, and 
  • Your federal gross income from farming is at least two-thirds of your total federal gross income. 

Note: If you are a partner, S corporation , or beneficiary of an estate/trust, you may also claim your share of the credit. 

Credit Details 

  • The credit is based on the amount of school district property taxes paid during the year. 
  • The credit is refundable, meaning you can receive a even if you owe no tax. 

How to Report 

  1. Navigate to the State Taxes section on the left-hand side of the screen. 
  1. Click the link: I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form
  1. In the dropdown menu, select New York
  1. Click on the IT Credits 100 – 200 Series tab. 
  1. Select IT-217 – Farmers School Tax Credit to open the screen. 
  1. Enter all applicable information.  
  1. Click Save once complete.
