About Form 706
IRS Form 706 is used by the executor of a decedent’s estate to:
- Calculate the estate tax imposed by Chapter 11 of the Internal Revenue Code.
- This tax applies to the entire taxable estate, not just to the share received by any individual beneficiary.
- Determine the generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax under Chapter 13 for direct skips—i.e., transfers made to “skip persons” (such as grandchildren or unrelated individuals more than 37.5 years younger than the decedent) involving property included in the decedent’s gross estate.
