Overview
The 5a check box on Schedule A lets you choose whether to deduct state and local sales tax or state income tax. You can only claim one of the two, not both. To make your selection, follow the steps below.
Deduct state and local sales tax or state income tax
To deduct state and local sales tax or state income tax:
- Go to Federal Taxes.
- Click Review.
- Click I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search for a form.
- Enter Schedule A in the search box and click on Itemized Deductions – Options to add and open the form.
- Answer the prompts as they apply to you, making sure to select the option to itemize your deductions.
- Choose whether to use the sales tax or state income tax deduction.
- Click Save.
