Filing a State Only Return After Federal Return Has Been e-Filed and Accepted | 1040.com®

Overview

When filing a state-only return after your federal return has already been transmitted and accepted, you may need to suppress the federal direct deposit or payment of information. This step is required to allow the state return to proceed and does not affect your already-filed federal return.

Important Clarification

  • Suppressing federal direct deposit or payment information does not change or refile your federal return.
  • Your federal return has already been successfully transmitted and accepted, and the original direct deposit or payment of choice remains in effect.
  • This step is only necessary to complete the state-only filing process.

How to Suppress Federal Direct Deposit or Payment Information

During the state-only filing process, you will still be prompted with questions about your federal or balance due. To move forward:

  1. When asked how you want your federal refund disbursed, select Mail a check.
    • If you owe federal tax, select I will mail a check later.
  2. Continue through the filing steps as normal.

Although these selections appear on the federal screens, they are placeholders only and will not be submitted, since you are not filing a federal return again.

Why This Is Necessary

In some cases, the system may prevent state-only filing due to data carried over from the federal direct deposit screen. By selecting a mailed option, you effectively remove the federal banking or payment details from consideration, allowing the system to proceed with your state(s) return.
