Entering Itemized Deductions

When you enter Items that carry to – Itemized Deductions, the software calculates your deductions and compares the total to the Standard deduction. The result that gives you the best overall deduction is automatically applied to your return.

Following the passage of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act in 2017, deductions on unreimbursed employee expenses, tax preparation fees and safety deposit boxes have been eliminated.

Itemized vs. Standard Deduction

The system will select the most beneficial deduction for you, but you can override the system selection by following these steps:

  1. Click Federal Taxes > Review > I’d like to see the forms I’ve filled out or search a form.
  2. In the search bar, enter “Itemized Deductions.”
  3. Click Add form beside Itemized Deductions – Options.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the deduction method that you want to use.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Select the state/local method that should be used (or leave this blank).
  8. Click Next and complete the rest of the questionnaire. When done, click Save.
