Overview
If your W-2 includes more than 4 entries in Box 14, please note that the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR) does not permit electronic filing (e-filing) state returns in this situation.
Why e-Filing Is Blocked
- Massachusetts has a technical restriction that limits the number of Box 14 entries on a W-2 that can be electronically submitted.
- If you have more than four Box 14 entries (e.g., Paid Family Leave, union dues, housing, or retirement contributions), the return will automatically be rejected for e-file by the state’s system.
Note: Box 14 on Form W-2 is used for informational purposes and often contains a wide range of employer-specific codes. While federally acceptable, Massachusetts’ e-file system does not support transmitting more than four entries per W-2.
What You Need to Do Instead
If your return includes more than four Box 14 entries on any W-2, you must file your Massachusetts return by mail.
Steps to file by paper:
- Complete your MA return in your tax software.
- Select the File tab.
- Next select Continue until you get to the e-filing Your Return screen.
- Select No thanks, I don’t want to file my return.
- Select Continue past the bank information screen.
- The next screen is View and Print Your Return, where you will want to print your return.
Note: Mailing instructions are also available on this screen. Mail the entire return along with copies of any tax documents that show federal taxes withheld. Do not forget to sign and date your return at the bottom.
Tips Before Mailing
- Attach all W-2 forms, especially the one with multiple Box 14 entries.
- Include any supporting documentation or schedules.
- Use certified mail or a tracked delivery service for peace of mind.
